Zion Canyoneering: Half Day or Full Day?
What each length of canyoneering trip near Zion buys: 2-hour UTV walks, 2.5- to 4.5-hour rappelling half days, and 6- to 7.5-hour full days, with rappels, ages, fitness and price.
For a first time on the ropes, take a half day: 3 to 4 hours gives you a short hike, a handful of rappels and the afternoon free. The Elkheart trip, with three rappels, is the one to start with. Take a full day only if your group is fit and wants many rappels: Stone Hollow and Powell’s Way run 6.5 to 7.5 hours, and Powell’s Way asks for a high level of fitness.

What a half day buys
A half day near Zion is 2.5 to 4.5 hours. The time goes on the ride out, a short, often steep hike to the top of the canyon, a safety talk and the rappels themselves. ROAM’s two Coal Hollow trips show the trade-off well: the 2.5-hour trip does the bottom half of Ladder Canyon with four rappels, the 4-hour trip 6 to 7 rappels, after the same half-mile hike.
Elkheart sits in the middle: three rappels in 3 to 4 hours, with youth rates from 8. If you want the rope work without a long day, it is the plainest choice.
What a full day buys
The full days are for groups who want more rappels and have the stamina for a long day. Stone Hollow takes 7.5 hours from Zion Ponderosa, with 10 rappels, the highest 100 feet (source: eastzionadventures.com, November 2026). Powell's Way takes 6.5 hours from Zion Mountain Ranch, asks for a high level of fitness, and leaves lunch and water to you. ROAM’s 6-hour trip goes to canyons behind locked gates on private land.

Two things that are not canyons
- Via ferrata. ROAM’s Elk Heart Cliffs via ferrata climbs more than 700 vertical feet on iron steps fixed to its own private cliff, then rappels and scrambles through a small slot, in 3 hours.
- Lessons. Red Desert Adventure, a canyoneering outfitter near Zion, also teaches classes, among them a 4-hour “Zion Subway Instruction” class in basic rappelling (on its own site, not sold here).
